Kelseigh Savage is a college dropout struggling with the difficult
and life consuming illness, Anorexia Nervosa. Already an introverted misfit in
society, she lives day to day only accompanied by the characters in her books
and by younger brother harry. Harry, who is charismatic, loud and fun loving is
the only other person who understands how Kelseigh feels living under the suffocating
rules of their parents and who truly knows what his sister is like behind her
illness.
One day, in pursuit to help his sister after realising how
depressed she is, Harry decides to break the both of them out of their strict daily
routines so that they can go on an adventure to lift the pair’s spirits.
Kelseigh weary to the idea due to the punishment that will be waiting on their
return reluctantly goes along with her brothers plans realising that a risk
might be what could bring her out of this tough section in her life.
The adventure takes them them to many different places where they experience new activities and
slowly Kelseigh starts to enjoy her time rebelling from her parents. For the
first time she witnesses what its like when making her own decisions and falls
in love with the idea of having independency.
Once realising that both teenagers had runaway their mother
frantically texts and calls Harry hoping to hear that they are both safe and on
their way home, however since Harrys aim was to separate Kelseigh from home
life so that she could enjoy herself, he ignores all from of contact from his
mother.
During the whirl of this whole new experience the two stop
for a slice of pizza, where Harry tries to indulge Kelseigh in a serious
conversation regarding her illness and his worries for her. This soon turns
into a heated argument between the two, as Kelseigh is sensitive to the subject
and in a rage Kelseigh storms off leaving Harry. On a long and silent journey
back home it becomes apparent how much the argument has affected the
siblings relationship.
For the next couple of days the atmosphere between the two
is still icy and minimum contact is seen between them, however it seems to
start to smooth over for the pair. Feeling guilty, Harry tries to apologise for
making Kelseigh go with him away from home and that he should have known that she
wasn’t ready to do so, upset because she realises that there is no one who
thinks that she can survive on her own Kelseigh lashes out at harry resulting
in another argument. Confused and angry Harry leaves and while crossing a road
gets hit by car.
Harry is taken to hospital with severe bruising and minor
fractures and after a night in hospital is allowed to go home.
After finding out about her brother Kelseigh makes the
decision to return to college to study Art and begins to take her recovery from
her illness seriously. Once she tells Harry about her new plans they make up.
In the epilogue Kelseigh talks about the months leading up
to her restarting college and how her relationship with Harry has progressed.
