Mental illnesses

There is a list of illnesses that come under the title of w mental illness, such as;
ADHD
Autism
Bipolar
Borderline personality disorder
Depression
Eating disorders
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Schizophrenia
And more

The most common mental illnesses of people around the age of 16- 21 is ADHD, eating disorders, anxiety and depression.
Depression;
In America about 25% of high school student suffer with mild depression and a large 8-10% have severe cases. Depressed teens can share the same amount of sadness, melancholny and anger as depressed adults do. However teens have been known to show more irrability and hostility. Teens can also complain of headaches and stomachaches as they can feel hypersensitive.
Depression does not have a single cause, it is different things that trigger depression in different people. A lot of depression can be caused from a stressful event for example divorce, bareavement and/or job/money worries. Another common reason for depression is illnesses. There is a high risk of getting depression if you have a longstanding illness such as cancer. Head injuries can lead to depression triggering mood swings and emotional problems, in some cases a minor head injurie paired with an under active thyroid can damage the pituitary gland leading to extreme tiredness and a lost interest in sex which can then turn into depression.

Anxiety;
Is another common mental illness in young people. Phobias, panic disorders and OCD can be included in anxiety. Roughly 10% of young people suffer with any of the listed above. Young people with anxiety can seem to be uneasy, fearful, overly emotion or unrestrained. Having thoughts of the same image or impulse in adolescents teens can be a sign of obsessive- compulsive disorder, also a traumatic experience in a child's life can cause post traumatic stress disorder symptoms of extreme fears of people and places.

Eating disorders;
Bulimia, anorexia and body dismorphia ares the most common eating disorders that we hear of in most people. It can affect about 5% of young people leading to serious body complications because of their extreme eating habits. Bulimia is known as a purging disorder where someone will bing eat then force themselves to purge the food afterwards. Anorexia is where someone will either eat a very little amount of food or no food at all in an attempt to make themselves thinner. Eating disorders are most commonly found in females, reasons for this could be because of pressure from peers, societies views on beautie and what the media shows as beautiful I.e. Size 0 models. People with eating disorders can show the signs of them by dramatic weight loss, frail appearance or if they seem they are afraid of gaining weight.

ADHD;
ADHD can be found mostly in the younger adolescents aged between 8-17 years old with 8-9% of people in that age group suffering with it. Shortened attention span, impulsiveness and most famously known hyperactivity and disorganisation can show ADHD. Young people can appear to become bored, unconcentraited and disruptive, this can be seen in both school and at home however it is most commonly present in school. ADHD is a genetic disorder and can be passes down through families, if a father has ADHD then there is more than a 50% chance that their child will have it and 30% chance of them having it if their older sibling has it.

Further look into eating disorders;
Eating disorders are not just where people are eating less of trying to make themselves skinnier, bing eating disorder is where someone will eat a large amount of food in a small amount of time this is usually because of emotional reasons. There is a wide range of eating disorders than cause different physical and mental health problems. There is not a clear one reason for eating disorders, both genetic and environmental factors take part in 'why'. Dancers have a large 12% who are affected by eating disorders and people who have experienced sexual abuse are likely to develop an eating disorder. Lack of control in someone's own life can lead to them having an eating disorder as they see it as the only thing that they themselves can control.

Treatment-
Typical treatment for eating disorders include counselling, a proper diet and the reduction of efforts to eliminate food. Sometime in extreme case hospitalisation is needed. 70% or people with anorexia and 50% of people with bulimia after five years will recover, however, both disorders have a higher score increased risk of death. Current views on treatment for eating disorders are based mainly on clinical experience, therefore, before treatment is started family doctors will play an important role trying to establish a good relationship with both the person and their family. Treatments can take place in a range of different settings for example hospitals, community programmes, day programmes and groups.
Methods of treatment include:
Family therapy- including "conjoint family therapy", "separated family therapy" and "maudsley family therapy".
Behavioural therapy- which focuses on gaining control and changing unwanted behaviours.
Interpersonal psychotherapy- treatment that encourages the patient to regain control of mood and functioning.
