I have been looking at three films that are all under the comedy- drama genre. All three of the films that I am looking at are diverse and different to one another in certain ways. I feel that looking at trailers and reviews for films that have differences, even though are categorised under the same genre, will help me develop my trailer and make it better as I can try to incorporate peoples opinions to benefit my trailer for a comedy- drama film.
Dope
The first film that I looked at was 'Dope' which is directed by Rick Famuyiwa and was rated 7.5/10 on IMDb and is in the genre of comedy- crime- drama. This film shows three geek friends from a rough part of LA called 'the bottoms' who are all trying to get into uni, when they fall into a drug gang incident. They are left with a backpack full of drugs and no real idea of what to do with it.
I looked at a few reviews on the film, most of them naming 'Dope' "Best film of the summer 15". Every review I read gave the film a lot of positive comments such as "This movie is simply amazing" "It's a critical darling that has generated major buzz in the art house world" and "One of the smartest and funniest urban comedies we've seen in a long time".
However with positive comments there also come criticisms. I feel that a very similar criticism was weaved through pretty much all of the reviews I read, basically claiming that they felt their was unnecessary information throughout the film.

Ashby
'Ashby' directed by Tony McNamara was the second film that I looked at for reviews and was rated 6.4/10 on IMDb, it is also in the genre of comedy- drama- romance which relates to the plans for my trailer as it uses bot genre that my trailer will be in. This film is about a boy (Ed) who moves to a new town and has no friends. As apart of a school project he has to 'go talk to an old person', this is where he meets ashby. The old man helps him on a journey to stand up for himself and becomes a guardian type figure to the main character.
From some of the reviews I've read, a popular opinion over this film is that the storyline is "uneven" however, they also say that the director has put a good twist on the story's formula with the added hit- man quality. Oppositely in one criticism the reviewer says that "it's a film that is constantly undermined by the strong sense of familiarity", what I've gathered for how people feel about the storyline for 'Ashby' is that it is a very typical, well known story just with a different theme thrown in to try and freshen it up. A quote from the examiner website review was "it's not a film that will linger on the mind for very long"

Perks of being a wallflower
The last film reviews that I have been looking at are for the film 'Perks of being a wallflower'. Now this film is categorised as a drama- romance, the reason I looked at this film is because it has the same drama aspect that I would like to be included in my trailer. This film has been rated 8/10 on IMDb which is the highest rating out of the three films I have chosen. The films main character Charlie (Logan Leerman) is a boy starting a new school and in an attempt to meet friends he stumbles upon, step siblings, sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller) who accept him into their group of "Misfit toys". As the film moves on Charlies mental struggles with his childhood and the death of his best friend are slowly revealed. Film partially about the life of a teenager with dramatic themes weaved throughout.
I read quite a few more reviews for this film than I had with the other films, this is because there were so many different views. However I feel that the majority of the reviews have a positive opinion on the film. The fact that the film is directed by the same person who, not only, wrote the screenplay but who is the author of the book is seen as rare and what I gather a very impressive thing. The actors that are chosen to portray Stephen Chbosky's characters are mentioned throughout many of the reviews with mixed opinions, one says that Emma Watsons take on the character of Sam is "Less impressive" and that "Watson's performance is flat for stretches and sticks out like a sore thumb" other opinion on Watson's performance is quite opposite. Another recurring impression that is spoken about is the fact that the main characters 'demons' are revealed slowly which makes you reevaluate what you have just watched. I think the reason this film has such a high viewpoint is because the dramatic themes for the drama aspect is so hard hitting and highlights a very real area in teenage life.

Looking at the reviews of films with similarities that I wish to show in my trailer is extremely helpful in the process because it allows me to take in the criticisms that people have and use them to mould and influence my trailer.
